Better Than Store Bought

Homemade hummus tastes so much better than what you find in stores. Anything made at home just has that special touch. Whether it’s peanut butter, granola, or cookies, homemade is always a win. I do buy store-bought items now and then, but there’s something truly satisfying about knowing exactly what goes into your food. This sweet potato hummus is not only easy to make, but it pairs wonderfully with veggies as an appetizer, and it also makes an excellent spread for sandwiches. If you’re looking to mix things up, this sweet potato hummus is the perfect solution!

Change Up Your Hummus Recipe

I love a classic hummus recipe with chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, and salt. However, sometimes I crave something different. This sweet potato hummus was born from that need for change! We wanted a new flavor that was savory and featured our favorite ingredients. Sweet potatoes made the perfect choice. They’re nutritious and delicious! We combined sweet potatoes, garbanzo beans, fresh thyme, tahini, goat cheese, and warm spices to create a smooth and creamy dip. Not a fan of sweet potatoes? You can easily substitute with other vegetable purees like pumpkin or squash!

How is Hummus Eaten?

Hummus is incredibly versatile! Here are some tasty ways to enjoy it:

You can easily make a pasta sauce by incorporating hummus. Simply sauté some veggies in olive oil, and then whisk in the hummus once the vegetables are cooked down. It’s a quick and easy way to create a flavorful sauce!

Dip

Hummus is most commonly served as a dip. It’s a fantastic appetizer or snack option. Pair it with crackers, veggies, or some crusty bread for a delightful treat!

Description

This Homemade Sweet Potato Hummus is the perfect healthy snack, packed with fiber, protein, and veggies! If you like a bit of heat, feel free to add more sriracha. Enjoy it with your favorite veggies, as a spread on sandwiches, or any way you like!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 cups garbanzo beans, cooked
  • 1/2 cup sweet potato puree
  • 2 tablespoons tahini
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)
  • 2 tablespoons sriracha
  • 1/8 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons fresh thyme, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons fresh goat cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Base: In a high-speed food processor, combine the cooked garbanzo beans, sweet potato puree, tahini, EVOO, and sriracha. Blend these ingredients together for about one minute, or until the mixture is smooth and creamy. If the mixture is too thick, don’t hesitate to add an extra tablespoon or two of EVOO to reach your desired consistency. Remember to pause and scrape the sides of the processor with a spatula to ensure everything blends evenly.

  2. Add the Spices: Once your base is smooth, add in the sea salt, paprika, garlic powder, and chopped fresh thyme. Blend again for a few seconds until all the spices are well incorporated into the mixture.

  3. Serve and Enjoy: Transfer the dip to a serving bowl and top it with fresh goat cheese. This dip pairs wonderfully with fresh veggies like carrots, cucumbers, and bell peppers, or you can enjoy it with crispy rice crackers for a delightful crunch.

Tips for a Perfect Dip

  • Customize Your Heat: If you prefer a milder dip, reduce the amount of sriracha or substitute it with a milder sauce.
  • Fresh Herbs: Feel free to experiment with other fresh herbs like parsley or cilantro for a different flavor twist.
  • Make Ahead: This dip can be made ahead of time. Store it in the refrigerator for up to three days, allowing the flavors to meld together.
