Description

The Homemade Meat Sauce is made with beef and Italian sausage. It’s great for lasagna or spaghetti, and it’s made with simple pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground Italian sausage
  • 1 medium onion chopped (about 1 cup)
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1½ teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 1 bay leafSalt and freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, cook beef, sausage, and onion over medium heat until mostly browned, about 5 minutes, then drain if desired, and stir in garlic until fragrant (about 30 seconds).
  2. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, basil, Italian seasoning, fennel, bay leaf, 1 teaspoon of salt, and ¼ teaspoon of pepper.Simmer the mixture uncovered for 30 minutes, making sure to stir occasionally.
  3. Remove the bay leaf. If desired, add more salt and pepper to taste. I personally recommend adding 1 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of pepper, but you can adjust the amount according to your preference.
