Homemade biscuit recipe

If someone has been making biscuits for 35 years, you can be sure that recipe is worth holding onto.

You may find yourself seeking recipes from various sources, such as your mom, grandma, or even your culinary school BFF’s mother (thank you, Barbie!).

The identity of the person doesn’t matter. What truly matters is that you obtain her recipe for biscuits.

Although I haven’t prepared this simple biscuit recipe in the last 35 years, I have definitely made the biscuits more than 35 times within the past 2 months.

They were included in my final exam at culinary school because they are extremely easy to make and incredibly delicious.

I love how this biscuit recipe can be easily adjusted to any desired quantity. It’s more like a flexible formula than a rigid recipe.

How to Make Biscuits from Scratch

For every six biscuits you want to make, use these ingredients:

  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 3 tablespoons milk

Want 12 biscuits? Double everything.

Want 18 biscuits? Triple everything.

How do you make biscuits without baking powder?

To make biscuits without baking powder, you can simply replace all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt with self-rising flour. This substitution allows you to create biscuits without the need for baking powder. If you prefer to use alternative flours, you can find suitable substitutions for all-purpose flour in the recipe notes.

How do you make biscuits without shortening?

If you prefer biscuits without shortening, these are the perfect choice for you. I used butter in this recipe because I personally love its taste. However, if you prefer, you can also use an equal amount of shortening as a substitute.

In addition to serving them as dinner bread, these easy biscuits are also fantastic as a base for biscuits and gravy, Eggs Benedict, or as a topping for Chicken Pot Pie Soup.

They are also perfect for making delicious Strawberry Shortcake. For an extra touch, you can sprinkle a little sugar on top of the rounds before baking them, unless you have any concerns about the fourth ingredient.

Can you freeze homemade biscuits?

Yes! According to some experts, this is believed to be the secret to taller biscuits, but in my experience, there wasn’t much difference in height.

Prepare your dough, cut out the rounds, and then freeze the unbaked biscuits individually on a tray or baking sheet. Once they are frozen solid, transfer them to a freezer-safe container. They can be stored this way for up to approximately one month.

When you’re ready to bake, there’s no need to thaw the frozen biscuits. Simply place them in the oven straight from the freezer. Just remember to add an extra 3 to 5 minutes to the baking time. This makes the already easy biscuits even easier!
